1 – Belkin: Conserve Socket

The conserve Socket by Belkin is first on my list because of its simplicity but effectiveness. This device goes into your outlet and will automatically shut off. There are three different time settings; 30 minutes, 3 hours; 6 hours. Once the device shuts off no power is used preventing from fantom power (when a dives is off but still uses a small amount of energy). As you can tell this would be great for; your daughter how seem to always leave on her straightener, or the dad that can’t fall asleep with out the T.V. on, or how about charing your electronics. We know that leaving them plug in when fully charged isn’t good for the battery. Just set your timer and the plug will do to rest. I can think of so many different uses for this relatively cheep product, coming to just 10 dollars

Google and Levi’s work together to create ‘smart jeans’

Google and Levi’s have collaborated on a fascinating idea to turn jeans into a touch-based controller. Google has developed a thread made of conductive thread that contains no metals, isn’t rigid and seamlessly fits so that it is not noticed when worn. Google and Levi’s are teaming up to create jeans to make life easier by installing control systems into the fabrics in our jeans that we can access immediately  that correspond with our personal electronics.

The question asked about this product is how it will make its way to fit our every day lives. It would be easy to vaguely imagine where we would find purpose for this – scrolling through lists on a pant leg, adjusting volumes and answering calls from inside our pocket but how is this really going to make an impact on a larger scale? Ivan Poupyrev, a technical program leader in Google research group has tested the product numerous times on a small scale – but still effective. The intent of the touch panels is to provide a quick and subtle way to interact with our technology we own Poupyrev used the scrolling gesture to adjust the hour on a clock – using the same motion, he lifted his hand higher and was able to adjust the minutes. Levi and Google are working together to further improve and advance the idea but no details were given about when the clothes will be available to buy.

Photographer or phoDOGgrapher?

camera, Nikon, photo, photographic, photography, technology

The world is constantly evolving and finding new ways of using technology to better our quality of life but sometimes it completely misses the mark. Nikon has just launched a new prototype camera that gives Dogs a chance to be the photographer. It seems like they are further concreting the idea that anybody and anything can be a photographer now a days including our dogs. This camera is designed to strap to your dogs neck and the photo is taken based on the dog’s vitals. An elastic band is used to monitor the dog’s heartbeat. Using bluetooth, it sends the information to the Heartography SmartCase which will activate the camera’s ability to take the photo.

Because the product is somewhat begging for a collection of useless photos, Nikon has not commented on whether or not this prototype will be released as a product. If this product makes a successful launch, the youtube world will only explode more in endless cat videos.

Go Pro Camera Drone to be released in 2016

camera, film, glidecam, gopro, hexo, photo, technology

The GoPro has been becoming increasingly popular and with the new camera drone coming out, they are most likely going to explode with business. Since last year, GoPro founder Nick Woodman announced yesterday that the company is building its own quadcopter, the HEXO+ flying camera. The drone is set to launch in the first half of 2016. This is incredibly exciting for the film world because it means not only are our limitations for shots minimize but the cost of budgets will too. It was once impossible to get any birds-eye view shot without getting a helicopter – now it is as simple as driving a remote control airplane.

The simplicity behind the device makes it user friendly, allowing the handler to control setting from their phone screens, as well as a view finder. If you are alone and would prefer to be the subject of whatever is being filmed, the hexo+ has a built in sensor that is able to track you wherever you go. You can choose to capture yourself in action from any angle, front, back, sides, above and everywhere in between, close up or far away.

The hexo+ can travel as fast as 40Mph/70kmh and is able to fly in winds up to 15mph. The only downside to these revolutionary drones is that the battery life span only lasts about 15 minutes but to make it fair, 15 minutes of footage can be a lot and only takes about 1h and 30 minutes to charge, so always bring an extra battery or two.

iPhones slowly taking over the (amateur) film world

camera, film, films, iphone, technology

We all know how much success the iPhone has brought to the digital world of photos but whoever thought it could become so handy for filmmakers. Camera technology is advancing fast and the photo/film world is constantly evolving but who knew that shooting with an iPhone would become more prolific than a RedEpic. Magnolia pictures recently released a new movie Tangerine that was shot entirely on an iPhone 5. Director Sean Baker had originally decided to do this for budget reasons. But after saw that the format and aesthetic that the iPhone had given it, matched the bright bold look that he was looking for. In order to contribute to quality without having to change devices, Baker also used anamorphic adapter prototypes from Moondog Labs as well as Filmic Pro to capture the film at a higher compression rate and, along with a Steadicam rig. Watching the trailer you can see that the quality is definitely still there and adds a natural, unique look to the film.

Tangerine hasn’t been the only movie ever shot on an iPhone. There are quite a few successful films that have all used to the same technique to help give their films a particular look. Their have been a few very successful ones that have stuck out amongst the rest – for example a film that came last year,  “I play with the phrase each other” tore through festivals with its success. Another movie that brought itself great success and all shot on the iPhone 6 was Romance in New York.  Although the film is only 18 minutes long, it falls short of any regret in using the iPhone as a their medium. Other films including: Uneasy lies the mind, Framed, The editor and Dragonborne are all critically acclaimed movies that have had a lot of success in the iPhone film world.

Not only are movies being shot on iPhones but ever since the launching of the iPhone 6, Apple has been showcasing the remarkable quality one can get from their iPhone. Going in this direction, movies shot on iPhones are only going to increase once people realize that sometimes its not the tools but the carpenter.

camera, go pro, technology

The Hero4 GoPro has been now been introduced.

camera, go pro, technology

For as long as GoPros have existed they have always been rectangles. For some, the rectangle shape wasn’t a comfortable shape to mount on their heads and certainly not very hydro-dynamic. The makers at GoPro decided to try and fix the problem by making the next new GoPro cubed shaped. The camera will be released July 12th and will be selling for $500 a unit. There are many new features that make this the go to model instead of the others.

The first feature is it being waterproof without waterproof case being mounted on which can be a lifesaver on those days you forget the case at home. Because of this advancement the size of the GoPro has downsized 50% smaller and 35% lighter. With the new cube, it allows more freedom and flexibility with the position of the camera. With this new feature, it makes it the first Go Pro that you can side mount to your helmet without any awkward elbow joint type mount. When attaching it to your helmet you have two position options, standard and low profile, depending on what you prefer. With only two button to manoeuvre the few functions it has, the lack of constantly having to press buttons, as well as the automatic shut off when not shooting. helps to conserve the battery life far more than the other GoPros. The sound quality is also fairly good on the GoPro, including when its submerged in water. The speakers are designed to drain the water quickly when wet so there isn’t a long delay in restoring audio quality after a splash.

In terms of resolution this is what it has to offer:

• 1080p at 60 and 30fps (SuperView at 48 or 30fps)
• 1440p at 30fps
• 960p at 60 or 30fps
• 720 at 100, 60, or 30fps (SuperView 60 or 30fps)
• WVGA at 120fps
• Stills at 8MP with 10fps bursts

Although the new GoPro seems perfect, of course it comes with some bad news. Where did your my cinematic 24 fps go? That’s the go-to mode for shooting less action stuff. Also, 720p at 100fps? 100? All these features are unfortunately missing from the new model. With new added features comes the downfall of having to cut some of those other great features out. Another unfortunate downfall is image quality. In comparison to the Hero silver, the quality is a lot darker softer while the Hero Silver compared, delivers a much Clearer image. The other problem is that because their is a lack of buttons, the only way to change the modes and settings of the camera is to purchase the $80 app, which of course is sold separately. With most advancements comes a few downfalls but the overall size and added attributes of the Aside from those unfortunate mishaps on the model, the size is a great success and can make all the difference when deciding which GoPro model you’d want to buy.

HD Camcorder and iPhone Sent to Outer Space.

Today we found quite a fascinating video in the webs whirlpool of viral content. This particular video focuses on a experimental spacecraft that was built by a man with the help of his young kids using simple objects found around the home such as, foam, hand warmers (to keep the camera and iPhone warm), strings, weights and so on. To get the contraption up there, they used a weather balloon and, the iPhone was used as a GPS tracking device while the HD camcorder was obviously used to record the journey. The video shows beautiful imagery of earth as seen from space. Although the chances of an accident are minimal, in order to release the balloon to that altitude special approval and notification was needed by FAA. What’s amazing is that the balloon landed only 30 miles from the original launch spot, this video inspired me and I’m sure it will do the same for you.

Bionic eyes now a thing of reality

After more than two decades of research and development, the first retinal prosthesis has received European approval for clinical and commercial use. People blinded by degenerative eye disease will have the option of buying an implant that can restore their vision at least partially.

“It marks the beginning of an era in which sight will be restored at ever more astonishing levels,” says Robert Greenberg, president and CEO of Second Sight, the California company that developed the device.

Walter Wrobel, CEO of Retina Implant AG of Reutlingen, Germany, a startup that is carrying out trials of a similar device in several countries, says the approval is an exciting development for hundreds of thousands of people who suffer from diseases like retinitis pigmentosa.

bionic, eye, technology

The Argus II

Second Sight’s device, the Argus II, will cost around $115,000 and be available only through a small number of clinics in Switzerland, France, and the U.K. The company hopes to receive approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by next year.

With the Argus II system, a camera mounted on a pair of glasses captures images, and corresponding signals are fed wirelessly to chip implanted near the retina. These signals are sent to an array of implanted electrodes that stimulate retinal cells, producing light in the patient’s field of view. The process works for people with retinitis pigmentosa because the disease damages only the light-sensing photoreceptors, leaving the remaining retinal cells healthy.

So far, the Argus II can restore only limited vision. “Patients can locate and recognize simple objects, see people in front of them, and follow their movement,” says Greenberg. “They can find doors and windows, follow lines, and in the best cases read large print slowly,” he says.

Getting this device to market is an important achievement, says Eberhart Zrenner, director of the Institute for Ophthalmic Research at the University of Tübingen in Germany and founder Retinal Implants AG. “On the other hand, the type of vision the Argus II can provide with 60 electrodes is quite limited,” he says.

Zrenner is developing a device for Retinal Implants that has more than 1,500 electrodes and captures images using light-sensitive photodiodes on the chip within the eye, instead of with an external camera. “It has the light-sensitive photodiodes positioned under the retina right at the place of the degenerated photoreceptors and therefore needs no camera outside,” he says.

Second Sight is also working on larger arrays. But for now, what distinguishes the Argus II from all other devices is its ability to survive long-term implantation in the human body. The Argus II has been tested in trials involving 30 patients. “We have done something that many people would have thought and did think was impossible,” says Greenberg.

Another form of bionic eyes is in development as well from The Boston Retinal Implant Project. Researchers there have been developing a bionic eye implant that could restore the eye sight of people who suffer from age-related blindness. Although the bionic eye will only help individuals that were born with functional eyesight, the implant is expected to considerably improve their lives.

Like the one offered from Second Sight the implant is based on a small chip that is surgically implanted behind the retina, and the users would need to wear special eye glasses containing a tiny battery-powered camera and a transmitter, which would send images to the chip implanted behind the retina. The new device is expected to be quite durable, since the chip is enclosed in a titanium casing, making it both water-proof and corrosion-proof. The researchers estimate that the device will last for at least 10 years inside the eye.

bionic, eye, technology

The chip behind the retina.

The scientists explain that the bionic eye will be affective for individuals who once had sight, since their brain knows how to process visual information. The unfortunate people who were born blind do not have the neurological capability to process the data received via the wire. Furthermore, the optic nerve must be at least partly functional. Otherwise, the data will not be fully processed. For many individuals that were born blind, this is a problem as well, since their optic nerve has never been used. However, most of these individuals have a natural compensation mechanism, in the form of enhanced senses, such as hearing and touch.

Although the device will not be able to restore the eye sight of the entire blind community, researchers  are certain many people will benefit from the technology. For instance, age-related macular generation is the leading cause of blindness in the industrialized world, with about 2 million Americans currently suffering from the condition. The new technology will hopefully assist people suffering from this condition, and individuals suffering from retinitis pigmentosa (a genetic condition), but will not help glaucoma patients.

The researchers note the device has some limitations, and it will not restore perfect vision. However, they are sure it will give people the advantage of having a general sense of their surroundings. Hopefully, the technology may enable people to recognize faces and facial expressions. “The thing is to significantly improve the quality of life for blind patients,” said Joseph Rizzo of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, who has co-directed the project with MIT’s John Wyatt since 1988.

This summer, the researchers plan to test the implants on animals. Within the next few years, they hope to start performing human trails. Wyatt says: “What level of achievement that would actually be is hard to know; but the idea is of not having to use the white cane – to walk around, find the sidewalk, avoiding a telephone pole. Being able to navigate safely in an unfamiliar environment, that’s the big topic.”

TFOT has covered the discovery of the last retinal movement-detecting cell and the that has improved our understanding of blindness. Another article recently published by TFOT deals with mind controlled bionic limbs, which were designed to assist disabled people in their daily lives.

LightTrac 2.0 – A Convenient Tool for the Outdoor Photographer

film, photo, photographic, photography, technology, video

Have you ever planned an outdoor shoot and the weather literally rained on your parade? Well thanks to a new Apple application called “LightTrac” you may never have to face that problem again.

This new app can help photographers track the elevation as well as the angle of the Sun for any given date or location on our planet. What this means for the outdoor photographer is that you can plan your photoshoots ahead of time! We all know the weatherman isn’t exactly ‘honest abe’ so this app is useful even if you know your locations well.

There is also a complementing app named “Visimoon” that functions basically the same way for those night time shoots. LightTrac is available for 4.99 and Visimoon is for 2.99 for iPad, Android or iPhone.
